After the 2014 coup d’état in Ukraine, seven years of failure of the 2015 Minsk II agreement and further NATO expansion threats, Russia finally stepped in to recognize the Donbas Republics and guarantees their protection.

As a citizen of Germany and the EU,
I feel ashamed and express my condolences to the victims of the Ukrainian tragedy and strongly oppose the committed war crimes.
The same goes for our involvement in the Yugoslavia- and Syria-Conflict, etc.

(see Opportunism, Economy and Wars from 2014)

After the 2014 coup d’état in Ukraine, initiated and executed by US, UK and EU actors, the 2015 Minsk II agreement failed for seven years ruining the life of the Donbas people, see the OSCE reports of their Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM):

(Edit: In hindsight according to the OSCE reports, the military action against the Donbas region didn’t stop after Russia recognized and protected them!)

Besides cease fire, Minsk II obliged Ukraine to recognize the Donbas people’s vote for independence. Both has been sabotaged with military actions and denial until today.

In February 2022, the Ukraine intensified their military campaign against Donbas, empowered and supplied by the US and NATO with weapons and building tensions against Russia.
US and NATO accused Russia to be the bad actor and to invade all of Ukraine.

On 2022-02-21 Russia formally recognizes the Donbas Republics and signed a treaty guaranteeing their protection from the Ukrainian military campaigns.

Russia earlier has failed to receive guarantees from the US and NATO to have its own borders secured by reinstating the 1990 NATO pledge to not expand beyond East German borders.

A good read – or watch – are The Putin Interviews: Oliver Stone Interviews Vladimir Putin in this regards, having its central point around the consistent US administration’s policy to expand towards Russia while letting all nuclear treaties expire.

I see the latest developments in its overall context of NATO expansion towards Russia and further deterioration of the relations between EU and Russia, even threatening the long term effort of North Stream II. This conflict might be about the economic & political control of Europe after all.

Updates 2022-02-25 …

Besides the OSCE confirmed ongoing attacks in the Donbas region since 2022-02-21,
there were rumors about breakthrough attacks of ‘Ukraine’ forces towards Luhansk and even the Russia border.

On 2022-02-21, Russia started to move its military inside Donbas, otherwise no protection could have been given.

On 2022-02-22, NATO (US, UK and EU) started with economic sanctions against Russia already.

On 2022-02-23 Russia started its attack against the Ukrainian forces, military targets only. Demilitarize and de-Nazify are Russia’s stated goals.

It seems that Russia had enough with the ongoing military attacks against Donbas and/or making a stand against the NATO eastward expansion. Probably both as stated by Putin on the 23rd/24th Feb ’22.
